Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society will present Conor McPherson’s award winning Irish play The Weir in the Town Hall Theatre Westport on June 13 and 14 and in the Linenhall Arts Centre on June 18 and 19.

Voted one of 100 most significant plays of the 20th Century in a poll conducted by The Royal National Theatre London, The Weir first opened at The Royal Court before transferring to the West End and Broadway. The play has received critical acclaim, winning the Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play (1997 ) and was hailed “A modern classic” by The Telegraph.

The Weir is set in a small bar in rural Ireland, where three local men, Brendan, Jack and Jim, (played by Brendan Mullins, Philip Murphy and Seamas Cafferky ) are settling down for the night, enjoying good beer and company.

Their normal routine is shaken up when Finbar (Seamus Beirne ) enters and introduces them to Valerie from Dublin (Carrie Doran ), who has just moved into an old haunted house in the town. As the night (and the amount of liquor ) progresses, each man starts to tell a ghostly tale. What starts as innocent bragging turns into real fright when Valerie reveals a real haunted tale of her own from the past.

The Weir heralds Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society’s second drama season, following last year’s hugely successful run of Brian Friel’s Lovers in Westport and Castlebar. This year’s production will be brought to life by Mayo-based director, Caroline Barry. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the work of one of the best contemporary Irish playwrights.

Tickets can be purchased from the Town Hall Theatre Westport website www.westporttheatre.com or call (098 ) 28459 and from the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar online at www.thelinenhall.com or by calling (094 ) 9023733.
