Kilkenny’s Darren O’Neill enjoyed great success at the National Stadium on Friday last when he retained his middleweight title beating European Youth champion Jason Quigley (18) 6-1 in the Irish National 75kg final.

The Kilkenny Advertiser caught up with the Paulstown boxer to find out how he celebrated his victory, “I didn’t finish up in the stadium until about 1pm, but then myself and a few friends went out in Dublin - nothing crazy as I can’t go too wild with my training schedule,” said O’Neill. “In saying that it was a great victory and I was delighted with the result, he added.”

Loreto Kilkenny 2-5, Blackwater Community School, Lismore 1-7

Loreto Kilkenny and BCS Lismore served up a fascinating camogie All-Ireland Colleges Senior A final at Ardfinnan during the week. While the Kilkenny girls played into a stiff breeze in the opening half this didn’t affect their scoring.

Loreto opened their account with a point from Lydia Fitzpatrick. This was topped up when Claire Phelan added two pointed frees and another after a sequence of hand passes - a tactic which worked well for the Kilkenny girls throughout the tussle. Aoife Nolan increased her side’s tally when she flicked the sliotar past BCS keeper Tracey Kiely. Lismore, not to be outdone replied with two frees from Marie Russell and Rachel Whelan who scored from an acute angle before the break.
