Free writers’ workshops begin in local libraries
Kilkenny County Council Arts Office and Library Service has announced its spring 2012 free writers’ workshops.
Each workshop will be hosted by well known writers and the courses will last for six weeks.
The first course takes place in Castlecomer Library and is entitled Playwriting; Writing for theatre. This course will be tutored by Ken Bourke and it commences on Tuesday February 21 from 6pm - 8pm.
Ken Bourke has been a professional writer for more than 20 years. He is an experienced facilitator and has worked with a wide range of groups.
Participants will be encouraged to identify their writing objectives in terms of how, where, what, and when they will write. Scripts will be explored in terms of story, character, structure, dialogue, and theatre conventions.
All levels of experience are welcome and the diversity of the workshop-group is considered one of the key resources. Numbers will be limited to encourage full participation by all present.
The second course is taking place at Loughboy Library and commences on February 24.
Entitled Creative Prose; There are two tellings to every story, this course will also be hosted by Ken Bourke and over the six weeks, participants will have the opportunity to develop their prose-writing skills. The workshop will use the theme of "There are two tellings to every story" as a reference point, but where the participants go from there is entirely up to them. All levels of experience are welcome.
John’s Quay City Library is hosting a third workshop run by tutor Michael Massey entitled Poetry; Through the medium of poetry. This course commences on Wednesday February 22 from 6pm to 8pm.
This six week course aims to encourage, support, and stimulate self-expression through the medium of poetry. A place will be created where participants will feel safe and comfortable reading and sharing their writing with like-minded people with the objective of having that work improved.
Deadline for bookings is Monday February 13. Participants are expected to sign up and commit to the six weeks of their chosen course.
Places are limited to 12 participants per course so book early to secure a place. These free workshops are open to Kilkenny writers only.
