Cats hit cruise control in landslide victory

Kilkenny Advertiser, November 06, 2008.

Kilkenny 63 Edenderry 0

Kilkenny won by a landslide in Sunday’s clash in Foulkstown against visitors Edenderry.

The home side were dominant throughout and never allowed Edenderry to settle on the ball. The pack were on top and the lineout was superb. The backs ran at every opportunity and gave the opposition an absolute roasting. Another feature was the support play and the off loading of the ball to each other. It was marvellous to see the backline come into the ball and take possession on the run. This gave them a yard on the opposition and was the reason why so many tries were scored. Edenderry are always a difficult side to beat but on Sunday they had no answer for Kilkenny’s strength and pace. Despite the scoreline going against them, they never gave up and kept trying right to the end.

The first Kilkenny try came in the third minute when Conor O’Brien squeezed into the corner following a scrum. The second came in the 20th minute when Killian Everard showed his pace after good work between the backs and forwards.

In the 30th minute, scrum half Ronan O’Driscoll was on target with a penalty and this was followed with tries from Mick O’ Grady and Alan Pembroke before the interval.

The second half was six minutes in when Conor Phelan took full advantage of a Julian Hughes chip into space to score a try. The same player crossed the line 5 minutes later after Rod O’Donoghue had made a burst out of defence to set up the move. The charge by O’Donoghue, a former Munster inter-provincial was typical of the Cashel born forward with a true Kerry spirit. Next on the scoreboard was Paul O’Flynn who had come on as a replacement. The move began

with a superb catch by Killian Everard in defence and his pace took him away from the Edenderry cover before passing to Victor Ryan and finally to O’Flynn who finished off the move in style. Before referee Arthur Lynch blew for full time, Kilkenny had scored three more tries.

The seconds gave Edenderry a mauling, scoring seven tries into the bargain. The try scorers were Stephen Hayes with three and Nigel Daly, John Madden, Paul O’ Flynn and Aidan Boland with one apiece. They also had good displays from Liam Meighan and Alan McIntyre.

The under 16s are putting out a call for new players and anyone interested in playing should turn up for training on Thursday nights at 7.15pm.
