Friends, fans and family of the Cartoon Saloon gathered on Oscar night last weekend in the Set Theatre to await news of the prestigious awards for which the Cartoon Saloon was nominated.

Marking the significance of the event were up to 150 people who gathered from 1am Irish time, to celebrate the honour of being nominated for the Academy Award and although the Kilkenny-based animation studio did not bring home the gong this year, the pride of the people of Kilkenny in the animators was not found wanting at the Oscar party.

Up against big budget movies such as Up and Fantastic Mr Fox, the Cartoon Saloon was happy (for now) to be nominated with such big names in the global animation industry.

Tomm Moore and Paul Young attended the ‘real’ event with their partners and local designer Joan Brennan was commissioned to design a dress in record time for Liselotte Olofsson, Tomm Moore’s wife.

Meanwhile, back in Kilkenny the red carpet was aptly rolled out for the big event and a mock Oscar ceremony - the Shloscars took place in advance of the TV show which was screened at the theatre.

Winners of the award for ‘best male and female hair in a leading role’ were local community activist Mick Greene and Capri Parysek. Other categories of winners were equally obscure including a prize for the best person at giving directions!

The Secret of Kells was nominated in the best animated film category and the Cartoon Saloon was proud to have the clip of their movie on display at one of the most-watched TV events of the year.

Art director at the Cartoon Saloon, Ross Stewart, who was one of those who did not go Hollywood for the ceremony said, “just to see a clip of our film being shown to a worldwide audience is enough for us. That’s the best exposure you could possibly hope for.”

In a statement to the Kilkenny Advertiser this week President Mary McAleese recognised the achievement of the Cartoon Saloon along with the other Oscar nominees.

This year’s Oscars were a remarkable testimony of the vibrancy and diversity of film industry talent in Ireland, and I send my warmest congratulations to the Irish nominees - Tomm Moore, Cartoon Saloon for The Secret of Kells; Nicky Phelan and Darragh O Connell, Brownbag Films for Granny O Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty; Juanita Wilson and James Flynn for The Door and Peter J Devlin for sound mixing on Star Trek. To have Ireland represented in five separate categories showcases the great success of the Irish film industry, particularly in the area of animation.”
