Sharon Shannon and Co leave crowds wanting more

Music fans travelled in their droves in very inclement weather conditions over the festive season to see what has been termed as one of the best Kilkenny gigs of the year.

Sharon Shannon along with guests, Imelda May, Shane McGowan and Mundy rocked the Hub venue at Cillin Hill on Wednesday December 30, last and the event did not disappoint.

Sharon Shannon and her band played a large selection of jigs and reels along with some of her more popular tunes such as the Bluebird and the Galway Girl.

Imelda May was a huge treat and fans voiced their appreciation when she and her ‘guitar-playing husband’ came on stage. Her huge voice and big personality took over the stage while she was performing. She had the audience in the palm of her hand as she pumped out popular songs such as Johnny got a Boom Boom. Encased in her usual corset, which she claimed she borrowed from Sharon, she gave a superb performance and left the audience of thousands looking for more.

Mundy was also a big hit as ever. This was his second year to play Kilkenny at Christmas and his fans did not let him down. Thumping out Mexico and top favourite July, he strummed his guitar to a huge response.

Shane McGowan also made his second appearance and for two years running turned up to serenade fans in Kilkenny with his soulful lyrics.

A little under the weather as usual, he belted out old favourites such as The Irish Rover which really got the crowd going. He also sang Fiesta, Sally MAclannan and Rainy Night. However, the ‘piece de resistence’ had to be the Fairytale of New York duet which he sang with Imelda May. It has to be said that never has the song sounded so right since the death of his former duet partner Kirsty McColl. Imelda was the perfect blend with Shane’s husky tones.

The gig was one of the biggest in Kilkenny last year and it was packed to capacity with music-lovers from all over the country.

The music was top class and we can only hope that the promoters will make it three-in-a-row and return to Kilkenny one again next year!
