Kilkenny to be ‘proactive’ for accessibility
By Kate O’neill
Kilkenny Borough councillors are to begin working on creating a mindset change among the public towards disability access.
The idea emerged at this month’s Borough Council meeting when Cllr Paul Cuddihy told the members of the great work being done by the people of Cashel, which recently obtained Gold Star Status for access.
The certification relates to accessibility for people with disabilities to public and commercial buildings.
Cllr Cuddihy stated, ‘The work was being done from the ground up.
“I was impressed by the fact that local businesses sponsor awareness cards and I was also impressed by the level of commitment to the project by all the citizens.”
He also recognised the great work done by the Kilkenny local authorities in the area of accessibility already but said, “We need to be proactive, we can change physically but we also have to change minds and attitudes”.
He finished by saying he thinks it’s possible for Kilkenny to become a benchmark for disabled accessibility.
