Damaged bank to be reopened in Graigue by BoI

Kilkenny Advertiser, July 03, 2009.

Fears that the Bank of Ireland would shut its doors for good in the town of Graiguenamanagh were abated this week following the announcement that a new branch was to be opened in the town after criminals destroyed the branch during a raid on the ATM machine.

It was thought locally that banking and ATM services would be lost to the town completely following the destruction of the building during the raid, but the Bank of Ireland has issued a statement stating that it will “restore full banking services to the town of Graiguenamanagh”.

The branch was destroyed by criminals on June 12 when the ATM was removed from the building, causing extensive damage and resulting in the immediate closure of the branch. The statement said that “construction will commence in the coming weeks on the new branch and ATM installation and is expected to be completed by late October 2009”.

Gerry Prizeman, regional manager – South East Midlands, Bank of Ireland, said: “Bank of Ireland has been the sole provider of banking and ATM services to the people of Graiguenamanagh and many other local communities for generations. We have been very conscious of the huge inconvenience that was caused by the forced closure of our branch some weeks ago and it therefore gives me great pleasure to bring the good news to you today. We look forward to serving the people of Graiguenamanagh for many years to come and will be opening the doors of our new branch to you all at our earliest convenience.”

In the meantime local people have been forced to use the ATM services of the banks in Thomastown, Kilkenny, New Ross, and Borris. However, a non-cash office has been established in Bank House in Borris where the staff of the old Graiguenamanagh Branch are temporarily located. They will look after the savings, investments, lending, and mortgage needs of customers until the new branch is open in the town.

Customers can contact the branch on 086 3851991.

The entire building of the old bank was destroyed when raiders used a digger to force the ATM machine from the building. They escaped with the machine and the cash. Gardai are continuing to investigate.
