Festival fun

The launch of the programme for the third Galway Food Festival was held on Monday in one of my favourite Galway hang out spots, the lovely House Hotel. The late lamented Gerry Gavin had launched the first festival programme and the delightful Máirín Uí Chomáin the second. This year Ronan Byrne (aka The Friendly Farmer) did the honours beautifully. In a break with convention, they had not sought out a food celebrity, but in keeping with the theme of the festival, 'Food Traditions', a man of the land was called for. JP McMahon, festival chairperson, and Heather Flaherty also spoke at the launch.

Two great Galway food festivals and competition time

Here is something a little different for those of you with a competitive streak. The granddaddy of all Irish food festivals, Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival, has a really exciting competition for you, marking its 59th year. If you are passionate about food and local products, its Best of the West recipe competition, run in conduction with LookWest.ie, has been designed to showcase all the wonderful food and producers of the entire western region.

Galway Food Fest is here to stay as it gets presidential seal of approval

Galway’s Food Festival has in just its second outing copperfastened its place as one of the city’s most successful festivals, attracting tens of thousands to the city over the bank holiday weekend.

Get ready for the second annual Galway Food Festival

The launch of the programme for the second Galway Food Festival took place on Monday March 11 upstairs at McCambridge’s. The lovely Máirín Uí Chomáin, in a particularly elegant outfit and a covetable pair of shiny, fire-engine-red shoes, did the honours beautifully. As an author, the chairperson of Irish Food Writers Guild, and a true Connemara woman, she was perfect for the job. JP McMahon, festival chairperson, also spoke at the launch, in particular speaking warmly of the late lamented Gerry Galvin, who had launched the festival last year. A man who will be sadly missed.

St Brendan’s bring home the glory

image preview

St Brendan’s College Belmullet, prevailed over a determined Ramsgrange Community School in a mouth watering battle in Athlone IT on Wednesday afternoon to be crowned UMBRO FAI Schools Senior B Girls All Ireland Champions. The mighty Mayo girls were in fine fashion as an early strike from distance courtesy of Kayleigh Winters deceived Katherine Whelan between the posts to give the Erris girls the lead. Their second was added mid way through the first half as Michelle Doherty nipped in at the near post to convert. The New Ross girls were determined to bring the game to the Belmullet ladies and that they did when Shannon Doyle pulled one back four minutes later. The second half was end to end action as Ramsgrange pressed hard for an equaliser. Mentor Neill Reilly had the Belmullet girls well versed and a sterling performance from their back four kept Ramsgrange at bay
