“Catholic cathedrals in Ireland are monuments to our imitative instincts and conservative distrust of artistic originality. There are examples of new church architecture but in general, Church authorities remained faithful to the Middle Ages and refused to abandon medieval architecture. It is therefore understandable that in 1949 when the building of Galway Cathedral was commissioned, it should have been conceived in a hybrid Romanesque style. In 1959, the foundation stone was laid and on August 15, 1965, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas was dedicated by Cardinal Cushing. THE GALWAY Pride Festival begins today, ushering in a weekend of music, dance, fancy dress, family fun, talks, youth events, and the annual parade, and in addition to the announced programme more events have been added.

There is lots to look forward to during this year’s Galway Pride Festival which takes place next weekend. The entertainment begins on Thursday August 13 with Pride Youth Day, which is an alcohol free event in Fr Burke Park and features plenty of amenities for under 18s. The official launch of the festival takes place on Thursday evening in Monroe’s Live at 8pm with all the community invited. Well known local band The Cozy Cartel will provide entertainment on the night with finger food and wine to be served.

The cost of maintaining 14 public toilets across Galway county is almost double that of maintaining 15 public facilities in the city. Figures released by Galway County Council reveal the full cost of operating the toilets in 2014 was €298,226, while data released by the city council show the total cost to maintain its public facilities in 2014 amounted to just over €158,000.
