Lyons calls on Council to heed Knocknacarra danger-spots

South Ward and Knocknacarra Councilor Donal Lyons has further turned up the heat on Galway City Council officials this week by issuing an open invitation to go walkabout on the roads of Knocknacarra after dark.

Councillor Lyons is concerned by the poor standard of public lighting on the Upper Clybaun and Ballymoneen Roads and claims his repeated calls for improvement have fallen on deaf ears.

"I challenged the Mayor, Padraig Conneely, City Manager, Joe MacGrath, and Director of Services, Ciaran Hayes to walk the Upper Ballymoneen Road and Upper Clybaun Road after dark, but they have yet to accept the invitation to see the dangers first-hand," he said.

"There is no public lighting, no footpaths, and in places, two vehicles are just about able to pass one another. These roads have to be considered dangerous and unsafe. I am seriously concerned that there will be lives lost on these roads unless something is done and basic infrastructure like public lighting and footpaths are installed.

"I have been inundated with representations from locals, resident groups and the general public regarding the serious condition of these two roads. I have been making ongoing representations, placed Notice of Motions, raised the issue of the dangerous condition of these roads at every opportunity with City Council Officials and still there is no plan to upgrade either of these roads."

Lyons’ comments come on the back of his scathing attack on the City Council's plans to locate hardstands in Knocknacarra despite the 2007 Framework study of the area calling for a sustainable residential development.
