While lucky escape on roads on Friday after high speed gardaí chase

A woman was killed on Saturday night after a road smash at Minna, Inverin, Co Galway.

The woman, who is expected to be named formally today, was in her 50s and the only occupant of a car that collided with another on the main road between Spiddal and Carraroe in Co Galway.

The occupants of the other car, one male and one female, were rushed to University College Hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Their condition was described as “comfortable” on Sunday morning by a HSE spokesperson.

The incident occurred at around 9.45pm on Saturday night and the road was closed for a time after the incident for a technical examination but it has since been re-opened.

Salthill Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the crash and anybody with any information can contact them on 091-514720.

A Gardaí spokesperson said that the woman would be named on Monday after her family members were informed of her death.

Meanwhile in the early hours of Friday morning, Galway was lucky to avoid another serious accident on the roads after a high speed gardaí chase through the city.

At around 1.30am on Friday, gardaí attempted to stop a car.

However the driver took off at high speed and was pursued through the city and Salthill.

He was eventually stopped on the Western Distributor Road and detained in Galway Garda Station following the incident under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.

An air rifle and air pistol were found in his car. The man has since been released without charge.
