The Language Institute at the Granary Learning Centre has launched its packed spring and summer language programme for adults, and a special programme for teenagers. The ever popular practical Spanish courses will run throughout the spring and summer with a new class beginning each month. German classes will also start in the middle of May for beginners and improvers, as will courses in Chinese, Portuguese, and Russian. The Spanish for teens short summer courses begin again in June, and the foreign language teacher training course will be repeated in May and June.

Final year students on the BA fine art degree at GMIT Cluain Mhuire will present their third year ceramic undergraduate exhibition in Galway city this month. Called Crank It Up, the exhibition will run from May 19 to 24. The exhibition can be seen from 11.30am to 6pm, and is closed on Sunday.

Mc Ginn’s, Bar & Restaurant are moving away from what was the small ‘early house’ pub on the Docks in Galway, and are adapting to an ever changing market. Tomorrow (Friday) sees the launch of Mc Ginn’s as a ‘Photo Pub’; a marriage of the traditional pub with photography. The launch on Friday night is entitled ‘Six of the Best’, an exhibition by six Galway-based photographers; Joe Geoghegan, Sean Tomkins, Sean Mc Cormack, Pat O Connor, Conor Ledwith, and John Smyth who have each created six landscape studies for the opening of Mc Ginn’s as the first dedicated Photo Pub in the world !

Two new organisations have been set up in Galway and they aim to get the city’s Chinese community to both embrace their heritage and integrate into Irish society, while also providing advice to Galwegians who wish to do business in China.
The Irish Chinese Society Galway and the Galway Chinese School were officially launched last week at a meeting attended by Li Chengyuan, the First Secretary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ireland.

Clifden has finally received confirmation of a new waste water treatment plant to upgrade the town’s sewerage system. The announcement was made on Monday by Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community, and Local Government.
The new plant had been planned and promised for years and its delay has resulted in a number of problems in the area. Clifden Beach has lost its prestigious blue flag status indicating quality sanitary and safety standards and the bathing waters have failed to meet minimum EU standards over the last few years. Clifden has been suffering from negative publicity incurred from the annual announcement of the Environmental Protection Agency’s water quality results. Following the announcement, the project is now ready to go out to tender.

It is customary on St Patrick’s Day for the US president to speak glowingly of Ireland, invoking the name of the national saint and smiling when handed a bowl of shamrock. However, when President Obama this year made his remarks on St Patrick’s Day, he gave his audience a brief history lesson linking two remarkable men, one Irish and the other African American. The Irishman was Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847), the African American, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895).
O’Connell is one of the giants of Irish history and, together with Parnell, represents one of the two traditions in the movement for Irish independence, the other tradition, of course, being that of Tone, Emmet, the Young Irelanders, and the Easter Rising of 1916.

A recent fundraiser for Galway Rape Crisis Centre raised almost €5,000 for the organisation. The money generated by its flag day will help the centre to continue providing counselling and support services to survivors of sexual violence and abuse in the west of Ireland.
