What then about the ‘subversion’ of traditional images of being ‘macho’ with the tough guy look of beards, moustaches, and leather jackets being a big part of gay male culture? Indeed, can you have machismo without homoeroticism?

TOMORROW AT 6pm sees the opening of two exhibitions in the Galway Arts Centre - Linda Shevlin’s Supernature and Vicky Smith’s Megga Bubble Space Burbs.

Supernature is inspired by Lyall Watson’s 1973 best-selling book Supernature: A Natural History of the Supernatural . Shevlin became interested in a series of 19th century botanical experiments Watson describes as being, “an exploration of the space between those things that we understand as normal occurrences and those that are completely paranormal and defy explanation.”

TWO EXHIBITIONS, Kathleen Furey’s On Paper and Levi Hanes’ The Night Scene Series, are currently running at UHG’s Arts Corridor in the hospital foyer.

Galwegian Kathleen Furey is a founder member of Artspace Studios. In On Paper, words and images derived from historical documents, children’s drawings, school copies, and fragments of conversation, are combined with printmaking and watercolour processes to produce mixed-media works on paper.

READINGS, ART exhibitions, tree planting, and a plaque unveiling will all take place as part of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature from April 23 to 28.

To get things moving, this evening at 6pm in the Town Hall Theatre, are the opening of two exhibitions. The Cutting Edge by Ciaran Murphy is a series of papercut illustrations inspired by nursery rhymes and the darker side of fairy tales. Crossing is a collaboration between Austrian artist Manfred Url and Austrian journalist, writer and film maker Norbert Prettenthaler.
