Galway Coalition to Repeal the Eighth calls for ‘Votes for Repeal march'

The Galway Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment has called a ‘Votes for Repeal march' to be held in the city on International Women's Day - Thursday March 8.

The march will assemble at Eyre Square at 6pm, and feature speeches and artistic support, before proceeding to the Magdalene memorial on Forster Street.

The Galway Coalition to Repeal the Eighth, which comprises more than 25 Galway organisations, plus individual supporters, is calling on the public to support the march. “We want to use the opportunity of the march to allow people of Galway to show their support for a repeal of the Eighth Amendment and help to win the referendum on the same." said Lorraine Grimes, the coalition's co-secretary.

Dette McLoughlin, coalition co-secretary, added: "One hundred years ago women won their right to vote. Now we demand our right to make informed decisions on our healthcare throughout pregnancy and childbirth, and to be able to access the services and supports we need to do just that here in Ireland. This is such a serious issue so we ask anyone who can attend to do so to let our politicians know the strength of our feeling on this."

Later that day, at 8pm, the coalition will hold a fundraising table quiz, entitled Know Women?, in The Cellar Bar, Eglinton Street. It will hold weekly stalls and information meetings across the city and county in the coming weeks and months.
