Gwendolyn Masin - a 'formidable talent' comes to Galway

Dutch violinist to play next Music For Galway concert

"THE EXPERIENCE of live music is everything. It’s the ultimate form of communication, moving us into dimensions that language cannot reach. A word is not a sentence, but a note can be an entire story.”

So says Gwendolyn Masin, the Dutch violinist who plays the next Music For Galway concert at the PorterShed, Eyre Square, on Friday March 9 at 6pm. Masin, and her Origin Ensemble, will perform a dance inspired programme focusing on central and eastern Europe, with works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Pablo de Sarasate, Rodion Konstantinowitsch Schtschedrin, Zoltan Kodaly, Johan Halvorsen, Manuel de Falla, Dvorka, Fritz Kreisler, Ernest Bloch, Béla Bartók, and Maurice Ravel.

Described as “a formidable talent that demands attention” (The Irish Times ), Masin is noted for “setting first-rate standards in concert performance with her technically superior, refined, intensive and richly contrasting expression” (Der Bund ). By the age of five she was already receiving musical instruction and performing in noted concert halls, and at 11 she gained national exposure in Ireland after appearing on The Late Late Show.

She is an International Music Award recipient, was nominated for The Outstanding Young Persons of Switzerland Award, and has received support from the Swiss Foundation for Promotion of the Interpretative Arts. In 2016, she was a keynote speaker at TEDxBern where she presented the talk, Better Performance Through Failing Better.

Tickets are €20/18/6 from O’Maille’s House of Style, Shop Street or Music for Galway (091 - 705962, www.musicforgalway.ie ).
