Top tips to finding your dream job

In association with Advertiser Classifieds

We all at some point in our lives have to work in a job which we do not enjoy, it is called being an adult, many parents will say to their newly graduated children who are toiling away in minimum wage jobs. However, it does not have to be the career you forge forever.

Here at the advertiser.ie we highlight the best ways to find that job that will provide you with contentment.

What are your interests?

They say if you are doing something you love, you will never work a day in your life and it is true. You should be energised to go to work every day, not dreading it. Now, obviously passion is not the only requirement for a job but it is that passion that will help you push through tough days, leaving you with a sense of contentment when you clock off for the day.

Do what you are; not what you love

We all enjoy doing what we are good at because being able to complete tasks to a high standard gives us a sense of worth. Sometimes, you may not be the most adapt at what you love. Perhaps basing your job hunt on your personality and ability might be more fruitful in the long run.

Make a career plan

"By failing to prepare, You are preparing to fail," said Benjamin Franklin and when setting out on your job journey you should set out a specific path. Ask yourself what career do I want? What qualifications and experience do I need? How long will this take me?

Tidy up that CV

When you submit a CV it is likely that it will be read by a machine looking for key words. If the machine does not recognise a certain number of words then into the metaphorically bin your CV will go. Tailor your CV to suit the job. Carefully read the job's spec and and then create your rocking résumé.

Make yourself known

Have you ever heard of networking? It may be not an unpleasant thought but with the jobs world being as competitive as it has ever been, networking or 'knowing someone in the know' could be the difference in your getting a job. Companies do not want to take punts on random people. Social media has made it all the more easy to reach people in top places. Make your LinkedIn irresistible to potential employers.

Gain work experience

There is nothing more disheartening than seeing "needs five years' experience" on a job ad. How does one get experience if companies refuse to hire people who have no experience? Internships are the answer. Yes, most internships are unpaid and many can involve gruelling, boring, work, but being able to say you have six months experience working in your chosen sector can give you a major boost in the job hunt. Also the internship enables you to network.

Never give up

Getting a job is hard, never mind your dream job. Everyone out there is your competition. You will get plenty of knockbacks and closed doors. But as Billy Ocean said; "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Keep plugging away; all it takes is for one door to open and you are in.

So there you have it. Go chase your dreams.
