Galway athletes primed for indoor champs

A record crowd is expected at this weekend's Galway Indoor Track and Field championships at the Athlone International Arena.

The new two-day format will host competitons from U8 to U12 on Saturday, with U13 to seniors taking place on Sunday.

Round one of the National Indoor League also takes place on Saturday.

Galway City Harriers will field both mens and women's teams, which are managed by Cliff Jennings and Majella Loftus Both squads have a number of talented athletes expected to feature, including Nicole King, Jean O'Connor, thrower Brendan Staunton, and sprinters Cillin Greene and Jack Dempsey.

International Cross Country

Galwegians featured at the prestigious IAAF Antrim International Cross-Country event in Greenmount, Antrim at the weekend.

GCH junior men’s athletes Eanna Folan and Thomas McStay ran well for the Irish U20 squad that placed second team behind Scotland at the Celtic Nations race. McStay came home in 20th and Folan in 31st.

Caron Ryan of Craughwell AC also competed on the Irish junior squad and ran a great race, placing 20th in the combined U17 and U20 women's race. Matt Lockett of GCH was team manager for the Irish U20 men’s team.

Fit for Life

The Athletics Ireland Fit4Life programme restarts across Galway clubs this week and next. Athenry AC commence on Monday (January 15 ) and is open to both existing and new members. Fit4Life is on Monday and Wednesday’s at 7pm meeting at the church car park in Athenry.

Galway City Harriers' Fit for Life programme will take new beginners starting today (Thursday ) from Westside Library in the city.
