Mass in memory of Fr Griffin will be celebrated in Barna Church at 12 noon, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the monument in Cloch Scoilte. The monument marks the location where the remains of Fr Griffin were discovered by locals on November 20 1920 following his assassination by British crown forces. The death of Fr Griffin received international condemnation at the time and is recognised as a significant catalyst towards the gaining of Irish Independence. The site of the monument in Cloch Scoilte has been described by local historian and author Cormac O Comhraí as among the most important sites in the history of the Irish War of Independence.
