Young Galway musicians to perform in Dublin

County classical musicians will join Dave Flynn's Irish Memory Orchestra

TWELVE YOUNG amateur musicians from Galway will perform in Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin, next month, as part of Dave Flynn's Irish Memory Orchestra.

The orchestra is the only one of its kind in the western world to play exclusively from memory, as opposed to reading from scores. This year, almost 60 young and amateur musicians and singers aged 10+ have been selected by audition to perform with the IMO following a one week intensive training scheme. For the first time this will take place in Athenry.

Sarah McHale, one of the apprentices, and a transition year student from Cregmore has been playing classical and traditional violin for the last nine years. “It’s a really good opportunity for amateur players to play in a semi-professional setting," she said. “You will push yourself more because you are surrounded by this incredible talent and it just opens your mind to your own potential.” Her younger sister Molly will join her playing saxophone in the brass section.

Other Galwegians in the IMO are Mary and Sinead Duggan from Claregalway; Emily Shiel, Laura Scanlon, Vitska Mulroy, Ailbhe Sexton (Cregmore ), Kate Reilly (Craughwell ) Lauren McCann (Athenry ), Helena Doyle (Coolarne ).

The preview concert is in the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry, on Friday November 3. Tickets are via www.irishmemoryorchestra.com/events
