Faherty in form in Melbourne

Spiddal native Ciaran Flaherty of GCH placed a fine ninth overall in the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday.

Faherty, who is now based in New Zealand and is aiming towards a major international championship over the next few years, clocked a time of two hours 26 minutes.

Back home Club Luthcleas Conamara AC 10k held its annual 10k on Saturday in Carna.

First home was Mayo AC athlete Brendan Gill in a good time of 35.37 on a testing course, with David Carter of GCH second and Daithi Murphy of Carrick on Shannon third. The first woman across the line was Eimear O'Leary in a time of 42.51, with Mary Gorham of Slaney Olympic AC second, and third was Maureen Linnane of Corrib AC.

Moylough 10k

Matt Bidwell of GCH was the winner of the North-East Galway Moylough 10k on Sunday. Bidwell finished in a time of 35.08, while second home was Paul Conlon in 36:21 after a sprint finish with the fast-improving Kieran Staunton of Athenry AC, who was given the same time. Westport AC athlete Dalva McPhillips was the first woman home in 42.21, ahead of Bernie Mulryan of Athenry AC and Eimear Butler in second and third respectively.

Autumn Cross Country

A number of Galway’s top athletes will compete at the Autumn Cross Country International to be held in Abbottstown in Dublin on Sunday. Top juniors such as Eanna Folan and Aoife King of GCH are competing, while Masters athletes Martin McEvilly and Peter O'Sullivan will be looking to secure Irish international vests in the Masters Trial race .
