Why should you get your chimney cleaned?

It may be officially autumn but weather-wise, winter has arrived.

It is wet, windy, and cold and all we want to do when we get home from school and work is to snuggle up in front of the toasty glow of the fire. But it is important to remember that having not been in use since the early days of spring, it is possible the chimney will be clogged with branches, leaves, and other objects to go along with the soot, tar, and ash.

Having your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected is a necessity and here at advertiser.ie we tell you why?

1 To prevent a chimney fire

The most obvious reason is to prevent the chimney going on fire and burning the house down. The stereotypical image of a chimney fire is one which is quite spectacular with loud cracking and popping noises and plenty of dense smoke. However chimney fires can burn slow and not be visible. They can reach high temperatures and can seep into the walls and ignite anything flammable. The flames can spread very quickly onto roofs causing huge devastation or total destruction to your home.

The primary cause of a chimney fire is a dirty chimney. Soot, tar, and ash build up every time you put on a fire. This mixture, called creosote, is highly combustible and it only takes a small amount to start a fire.

2 Avoid smoke damage

An unkempt chimney will accumulate soot around the flue. This inhibits the flue from drawing smoke upwards and out the chimney. Instead the smoke will come back down the chimney and enter your room, leaving soot all over your furniture and causing smoke damage. It can also leave black staining to your fireplace which can be difficult to remove.

3 Your health

Cleaning your chimney is important for your health. Carbon monoxide (CO ) is produced when fuel is burned. Even the smallest amounts of CO can cause dizziness, nausea, and fainting. If chimney flue is blocked, it can cause a build up of CO levels which can be lethal for anyone in the home.
