Moycullen too strong for Super League newcomers Maree

Moycullen's Super League basketballers welcome DCU Saints for their first home game of the season on Saturday (7pm ) in the Kingfisher.

Always a close tussle, Saints finished below the Galway side in the league table, yet overcame them twice last season.

"Both Saints’ games last season were disappointing in that they were the only games all season that I felt really slipped away from us,” says Moycullen head coach John Cunningham.

“They appear bigger since last year with their new American so it will be a good test for our interior defence. We hope to get a good crowd in for our first game and give them something to shout about."

Supporters had good reason to cheer on the opening weekend when they overcame newcomers and local rivals Maree in Oranmore by 88-63.

In the hotly anticipated Galway derby season opener, Moycullen were able to call on their eight years of experience playing in top league in the country against a willing, but young Maree outfit.

“We did to Maree what teams used to do to us when we first joined the league," says Cunningham. "Wore them down and found better looks as the game went on."

Despite some frenetic early exchanges and some superb scoring from Maree youngster Eoin Rockall, Moycullen were always edging ahead and found themselves 30 to 43 ahead at the half.

“Eoin had a fantastic game for his first ever Super League outing, but we just about managed to keep him in check most of the game, and I thought we had a much better spread of scoring,” says Moycullen captain James Loughnane, who also top-scored for his team with 18 points.

With the excitement of the first Super League Galway derby now behind them, Maree now travel north to tackle Belfast Star, who overcame KUBS 89-49 last weekend.

Moycullen: James Loughnane (18 ), Brandon McGuire (18 ), Patrick Lyons (12 ), Kyle Cunningham (11 ), Cian Nihill (9 ), Joseph Tummon (7 ), Dylan Cunningham (5 ), Mindaugas Kurcenkovas (4 ), Paul Freeman (4 ), Rory Gilson, Sean Candon, Conor Curran.
