Glennon hails his trio of leaders ahead of quarter-final with Cork

The Galway senior ladies footballers are in action this Saturday in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

The Connacht champions, who beat Mayo by 3-12 to 1-08 in early July, will face title favourites Cork at Cusack Park in Mullingar at 12.30pm.

However Galway team manager Stephen Glennon and his panel are looking forward to the challenge in two days' time.

"Cork have been the standard bearers in ladies football over the past decade, says Stephen Glennon. "They have been the best team in Ireland as they have proved many times and everyone in sport wants to test themselves against the best. And so do we.

"We have put in a very good effort both physically and mentally over the past months and Saturday will be a test of that. It will be a big test, but it is one we are really looking forward to."

Glennon is pleased with his squad's preparations over the past few months, and the work performed by his entire backroom team.

"Michael Comer's attention to detail is top class and the panel have really enjoyed and improved over the year from his coaching. Likewise, Richard McNicholas, Noel Kelly and Ciara Moran have been super all season, and they have done huge work for and with the squad.

"Everything we do collectively has the sole objective of giving Galway players the best opportunity to be as successful as they can be, and to allow them to develop into the best footballers that they can be."

Glennon says Galway have ticked as many boxes as they can to be well prepared for this game.

"We are hopeful that will come to fruition on Saturday. It is seven weeks since we won the Connacht final and we are hoping we can bring that good form back to the field of play this weekend. The girls went back to their clubs for a while and we have played a few challenges and now we are tapering down training this week to try to have lots of energy for 12.30pm on Saturday."

Galway's captain this season is the experienced Emer Flaherty and the team has two joint captains in Lisa Gannon and Fabienne Cooney. Glennon is delighted with their leadership.

"It is only as the year goes on that you appreciate the leadership roles some of the girls take on, and hopefully in the future we will put a leadership group in place. Those three girls have been super over the past few months and it is about all the girls on the squad taking ownership of the journey that they are on with Galway football."

Galway are 9/4 outsiders to take down the Munster ladies this weekend with the Rebels 2/5 favourites to advance to the last four.

If Galway are to win they will need key forwards such as Treacy Leonard and Mairead Seoighe in good form and getting plenty of supply.

That duo notched a combined 2-11 in the provincial final with Seoighe rifling 2-2 and Leonard hitting 0-9 (7fs ), and if Galway are to spring a surprise, they will need those ladies raising a few flags over the hour.
