Inishbofin summer concerts

Wallis Bird, Mick Flannery, Declan O'Rourke, Maighréad and Triona Ní Dhomhnaill, Old Hannah

MICK FLANNERY, Wallis Bird, and Declan O’Rourke are among the leading Irish singer-songwriters who will be making their way to Inisbofin, for the Connemara island's 21st series of summer concerts.

Wallis Bird, whose music combines folk, blues, funk, and rock, plays on July 25. She is followed on August 1 by singer-songwriter Jack O’Rourke, who has been compared to John Grant and Emmylou Harris, performing songs from his debut album Dreamcatcher.

August 8 sees the return of Mick Flannery. A singer-songwriter of the first order, his voice has been described as "pained, gravelly, and powerful. Recorded or live, it carries through, and stops you in your tracks".

On August 15, the award-winning Declan O’Rourke takes to the stage. His songs have been covered by Eddi Reader and Josh Groban, and he has been praised by the great Paul Weller, who said, “he writes the sort of classic songs people don’t write anymore, songs that sound like they’ve been around forever".

Two of the greatest stars of Irish traditional singing, Maighréad and Triona Ní Dhomhnaill, perform on August 22. The sisters, along with their brother Mícheál, formed Skara Brae while still in their teens, in the 1970s. Tríona later joined The Bothy Band.

The closing concert, on August 29 is with Old Hannah, a quartet whose music combines roots, bluegrass, Irish trad, and four part harmonies.

Concerts are on Tuesdays in the Dolphin Hotel at 9.30pm. Admission is €20 (adults ) and €10 (children ). For more information is via 095-45991 or [email protected].
