Galway Cathedral Summer Concerts 2017

New series begins on July 6 with ConTempo Quartet

GALWAY CATHEDRAL'S annual international summer concert series returns next month with performances by Paul Kieffer; The Choir of St Paul’s College, Hong Kong; Ansgar Wallenhorst; and an array of Galway talent.

The series begins on July 6 with the ConTempo Quartet conductor Raymond O’Donnell, the Galway Cathedral Players, and David Grealy performing Poulenc’s concerto for organ and orchestra; Barber’s Adagio for Strings; and Respighi’s Suite for Strings and Organ.

The Choir of St Paul’s College, Hong Kong, directed by Sandra Ng, features on July 20. They will be joined by organist Felix Yeung to perform Stanford’s Communion Service in C and Evening Canticles in C, as well as music by Britten, Redford, and Balfour Gardiner.

Germany's Ansgar Wallenhorst plays an organ recital on July 13. The programme includes Vierne’s Symphony No 3 and music by Bach and Franck. Galway's Robbie Carroll will make his solo debut in the Cathedral series on July 27, playing Reubke’s organ sonata, one of the most dramatic pieces in the repertoire.

Gerard Gillen, organist of Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral and professor emeritus of music at Maynooth University, will play both organs in Galway Cathedral on August 3 for a programme featuring Mendelssohn, Guilmant, and Sweelinck.

The closing concert on August 10 features Switzerland based, Galway soprano, Aisling Kenny, joined by Paul Kieffer (USA ) on lute, and organist Raymond O’Donnell, performing music by Purcell, Monteverdi, and Dowland and others.
