Athlone poet wins Listowel Writers Week poetry award

Athlone poet Jackie Gorman has won the 2017 Listowel Writers Week Single Poem Award.

Awards for poetry and fiction were presented as part of the opening ceremony for Listowel Writers Week 2017.

Listowel Writers Week is an internationally acclaimed literary festival and the various competitions give high-profile recognition to emerging writers. Ms Gorman won the 2017 Single Poem Award for her poem The Blue Hare.

“I’m thrilled to have won the Single Poem Award in Listowel Writers Week 2017,” Jackie Gorman commented. “The week is an amazing celebration of Irish writing and I have been an admirer of the festival for a long time and have attended it on numerous occasions. To receive the award for my poem means a lot to me.”

The Blue Hare will be published in the October 2017 edition of the UK Literary Journal, The Lonely Crowd.

Jackie Gorman was selected earlier this year to be part of the 2017 Poetry Ireland Introductions Series, a national programme to support emerging poets in Ireland. She has had work published in Ireland, the UK, and the USA in journals such as Poetry Ireland Review, The Sentinel Literary Quarterly, and the Lakeview International Journal of Literature & Arts.

She has also had work in a number of anthologies, including the 25th anniversary edition of the Windows Anthology. Earlier this month, she read her work at Poetry Ireland as part of the International Festival of Literature, Dublin. She is currently studying for an MA in poetry studies at the Irish Centre for Poetry Studies at Dublin City University.
