Galway Pro-Choice march to demand TDs support repeal of Eighth Amendment

Letters demanding support for Repeal to be handed in at four constituency offices

Galway Pro-Choice will march to the offices of deputies Seán Kyne, Hildegarde Naughton, Catherine Connolly, and Eamon Ó Cuív, to deliver letters demanding the TDs support the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

The march and letters are part of a planned ‘Letters for Choice’ event by the group which will take place on Thursday May 25. Members of the public are invited to assemble with Galway Pro-Choice in Eyre Square at 3pm, before marching to the offices of the four TDs. At each office, Letters for Choice, which have been signed by constituents, will be handed in. The letters call on the TDs to take into account the recent findings of the Citizens' Assembly, when 87 per cent of its members voted against retaining the Eighth Amendment as it currently exists.

A spokesperson for the group is encouraging the public to attend. "We are asking people to let our local TDs know that we can’t wait to repeal the Eighth Amendment, we need a referendum to be called as soon as possible," she said. "Women’s lives and health must be protected, and their choices respected. TDs have a duty to represent us when it comes to a vote - regardless of their own personal stance on this issue. They cannot ignore our demands any longer."

Galway Pro-Choice is also calling on the public to write a letter supporting a repeal of the Eighth or use the letter drafted by Galway Pro-Choice on www.facebook.com/events/631063187093303
