Far From Literature returns to Cúirt

Elaine Feeney, Alan McMonagle, Gerry Hanberry, Charlie Adley, and Páraic Breathnach to read at annual event

FAR FROM Literature We Were Reared, the night showcasing prose, poetry, spoken word, music, and comedy from local writers and performers, returns to the Róisín Dubh this weekend as part of the Cúirt literary festival.

The event began life in the upstairs room at the Róisín Dubh in 2012 by Seamus Ruttledge and Conor Montague as a good natured jibe at literary events which take themselves too seriously. Since then it has grown to become one of the success stories of the festival, and now has a third coordinator in local writer Aoibheann McCann.

Aoibheann, Gerry Hanberry, Paul David Murphy, and Conor Montague will host this year’s event. Writers performing include Elaine Feeney, whose fourth collection of poetry, Rise, was launched this week as part of Cúirt; Lorna Shaughnessy, fresh from the success of her spoken word performance piece, The Sacrificial Wind, at the Town Hall; Festival producer, Páraic Breathnach will tell a scéal or two on the comedy stage; Alan McMonagle will read from his acclaimed debut novel, Ithaca; Nicole Flattery will share ‘Track’, recently short-listed for the White Review Short Story Prize; and The Atlantic Rhythm Section will keep things funky on the music stage.

Also performing on will be Celeste Auge, Trevor Conway, Miceal Kearney, Sandra Coffey, Aoife Casby, Liz Quirke, Hugo Kelly, Ciaran Tierney, George Shiels, Stephen Byrne, Hugo Seale, Kernan Andrews, Dawn McDonough, Charlie Adley, John Donnellan, Johnny Hannon, Gerry Hanberry, Órfhlaith Foyle, Jimi McDonnell, and surprise guests.

Far From Literature takes place in the Roisin Dubh this Sunday from 8pm. Admission is €10 and all proceeds go to the Galway Rape Crisis Centre. Tickets are also available via www.roisindubh.net and www.tht.ie
