Clery looking for first win against visitors Cork

Galway Women’s FC turn their attention to the Continental Tyres Shield on Saturday when they host Cork City in Eamonn Deacy Park (6pm ).

Manager Billy Clery will be looking for his first win this season or Galway will be knocked out of this competition by a much improved Cork side.

Galway FC have produced two competitive displays in their two opening Continental Tyres Women's League, but have yet to register a win. Last weekend they returned from Ferrycarrig, having lost to Wexford Youths by two late goals.

It had been a tough week for Galway’s back four and midfielder Lisa Casserly, who were also involved in the intervarsities during the week with NUI Galway unlucky to lose the final the day before.

However Galway started against Wexford with great promise, dominated the first half, closed down their opponents, and moved the ball quickly.

On 19 minutes a smart Galway free kick from Méabh De Búrca was tipped to Lynsey McKey, but her shot was just over, while a minute later Sadhbh Doyle fired over for the visitors.

Galway produced their best chance of the half when a McKey cross was headed back across the goal by Doyle, only for Nicola Synnott to produce a goal-saving tackle when Aislinn Meaney was about to pull the trigger.

Having been denied on 62 minutes with a De Búrca diving block, Wexford almost got the lead from Claire O’Riordan, but 12 minutes later she made no mistake with a diving back post header from an Emma Hansberry corner. Five minutes later Hansberry then found the net after a mishit strike from O’Riordan fell to her in the box. With three minutes to go Galway nearly had one back, but McKey’s strike was just wide.
