Volunteer Galway training in April

Volunteer Galway is encouraging community and non-profit organisations which involve volunteers, to sign up for its Volunteer Leadership Training which is taking place on April 5 and 12 in Croí House, Moyola Lane, Newcastle.

The training costs €100 per participant for two full days training.

The training is being held to assist organisations in planning for and recruiting volunteers to help in the valuable work that these organisations do.

Donncha Foley, development manager with Volunteer Galway said; “We have over 1,000 new potential volunteers using our service every year, and we are running the training to help organisations to look at how they involve volunteers at the moment and see how they can involve more people in their local community.”

The training focuses on four specific areas; Planning for Volunteer Involvement; Recruiting and Selecting Volunteers; Supporting and Supervising Volunteers; and Volunteer Policies. Each module will give an opportunity for organisations to share their experiences and learn from each other. Participants will then be able to bring back new ideas to their own organisations.

Anyone interested in the training should contact 091 581727 or email [email protected], or [email protected].

New health centre needed for Inishbofin

A Galway island, which has a population of 160 and is a popular tourist attraction, cannot “afford to be left without a health centre,” a member of the HSE West’s regional health forum insisted recently.

Cllr Mary Hoade, a former chairperson of Galway County Council, said a new health centre and nurses’ residence was planned for Inisbofin a number of years ago.

She requested information on the progress of the project at a meeting of the forum recently at Merlin Park Hospital.

In reply, Tony Canavan, the health authority’s chief officer for community services, said the organisation’s estates department was liaising with the county council engineer and are looking at a company to carry out an environmental study on a proposed site. The study will determine if this site is suitable.
