New ‘edible forest’ demonstration garden for Westside

The planting of a new edible forest demonstration garden in the Westside Amenity Park, between the Circular Road and Siobhan McKenna Road, takes place this Sunday at 2pm.

The ‘edible forest’ will consist of native trees, with a variety of soft fruit, fruits trees, and edible shrubs, alongside perennial and annual edibles and medicinal herbs. There will also be information on the project and a public talk on edible forests by Istvan Markuly, agroforestry and permaculture advisor to the project, tomorrow from 7pm to 9pm, in the Westside Youth Project, Corrach Buí Community Centre, Circular Road, Rahoon.

Forest Gardening has three main intentions; to produce high yields of food and other materials; to create a self maintaining resilient garden, and also to promote healthy ecosystems. The project is guided by the ethics and principles of permaculture, emulating nature and working in harmony with the will of the land itself.

The events are part of National Tree Week and are being organised by Third Space Galway with support from the Galway City Council, Galway City Partnership, CVG, and Let’s Get Galway Growing. For more information see www.thirdspacegalway.com All are welcome to the events.
