Action plan for 20-year strategy for Irish language will be published by summer

Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources and Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South Seán Kyne last evening confirmed that his Department is working on an action plan for the twenty year strategy for the Irish language.

The Action Plan will draw on the report compiled for the Department by the NUIG’s Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta and will emulate the style of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs by setting out clear goals to be achieved and points of responsibility for the period 2017 to 2022.

“The launch this week of Seachtain na Gaeilge is a reminder of the place and value of An Ghaeilge in our country. The twenty year strategy for the Irish Language (2010 – 2030 ) is an ambitious document aiming to increase the number of daily Irish speakers, to support the Gaeltacht and use of An Ghaeilge as the community language, and to increase the visibility of An Ghaeilge across our society,” he said.

“We are making progress on the implementation of the Strategy with innovations such as the launch of the first ever policy strategy for Gaeltacht Education and the targeted support for Udaras na Gaeltachta and the hundreds of Irish language organisations across the country.

“However, a new action plan with clear objectives and points of responsibility will help guide the effective and timely implementation of the twenty year strategy. My Department officials are working on this action plan which will be relevant to Gaeltacht communities but also communities across the country as we seek to achieve the aims of the twenty year strategy. “I anticipate that the action plan, which is an initiative I have specifically sought, will be published by this summer,” he concluded.
