Horgan called up to Ireland squad

Galway city native Daryl Horgan has been called up to the Ireland squad for the World Cup qualifier against Austria in Vienna in November 13.

The 24-year-old has been in unstoppable form for Dundalk this season helping the Oriel Park outfit to the SSE Airtricity Premier Division title as well the FAI Cup final and the Europa League group stages.

Horgan who has been capped for Ireland at U19 and U21 level, had been the subject of speculation for an international call-up for Martin O’Neill’s men for months.

The winger started out his footballing career with Salthill Devon in 2010 before moving on to Sligo Rovers, Cork City, and then finally to Dundalk.

If Horgan makes his debut in the Ersnt-Happel Stadium, he will become the first League of Ireland to play in a competitive international for Ireland since Pat Byrne of Shamrock Rovers took to the field against Denmark on November 13 1985.

He will also become the first Galwegian to be capped at senior international level since David Forde played the final 20 minutes of a 2-1 defeat to Belarus in Turner’s Cross in Cork back in June if he earns his first international cap.
