Irish Times' Lorna Siggins to read at alway Library

October's Over The Edge: Open Reading

THE IRISH Times' Lorna Siggins; Bernadette Joyce, a wtiness to Pinochet's Chile; and Jackie Walker, a British Labour Party activist, will read at the Over The Edge: Open Reading in the Galway City Library, on Thursday October 27 at 6.30pm.

Lorna Siggins has been a staff journalist with The Irish Times since 1988 and is its Western and Marine Correspondent. She has written books on the first Irish ascent of Everest in 1993, on former Irish president Mary Robinson, and, most recently Once Upon A Time in the West: The Corrib Gas Controversy.

Bernadette Joyce, from Carrowbeg, outside Headford, was part of the Presentation Mission first in New Zealand and then in Chile for 40 years, where she experienced the shantytowns during the Pinochet years. In her book, Eva's Journey (Columba Press, 2016 ), she exposes the injustices she witnessed meted out to the poor, their constant struggle to be heard, and believed, especially in crisis situations.

Of Jewish and Jamaican ancestry, Jackie Walker is known for her humour and insight into the complexity of biracial identity. She is the author of the memoir, Pilgrim State, which won a Best Publication award from the Association for Social Policy for its “lyricism and extraordinary use of narrative voice".

The winners in this year’s Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition will also be announced. There will be an open-mic after the featured readers. The MC will be Susan Millar DuMars.
