CroĆ­ to host free public talk in Galway for World Stroke Month

Stroke is Ireland's biggest killer after cancer and heart disease, resulting in 2,000 deaths and 7,000 hospitalisations a year, but many strokes are preventable and treatable, and recognising signs and symptoms early are vital.

October is World Stroke Month and on Thursday [October 20], local heart and stroke charity, Croí, in collaboration with the specialist stroke team at University Hospital Galway, is hosting a free public talk, entitled Recovering from and Living with Stroke. The talk takes place in the Croí Heart & Stroke Centre, Newcastle, 7pm to 8.30pm.

The talk is aimed mainly at stroke survivors, their families, and carers. Specialist speakers include Dr Tom Walsh, consultant geriatrician and stroke physician, UHG, who will speak about recognising and treating stroke; Ciara Breen, senior occupational therapist and early supported discharge co-ordinator, UHG, who wil' talk about understanding memory and thinking difficulties post stroke; while Libby Kinneen, speech and language therapist, Croí, will deliver a talk entitled Living with Communication Problems after Stroke.
