Tuam Stars and Corofin to clash in quarter-final

Three county senior quarter-finals are down for decision on Sunday in the Claregalway Hotel/Bon Secours County Senior Football Championship.

The biggest game of the last eight sees current county champions Corofin take on a team that almost beat them last season, Tuam Stars, at 5.15pm in Tuam Stadium.

Corofin are under the management of former All-Ireland winning selector Kevin O'Brien this season and he will need to have his charges well focused and ready for the stiff challenge that Tuam, under Alan Flynn, will bring to the game on Sunday.

Only for a defensive error late in the game last season, the Stars would have knocked Corofin out of the championship , and they will be organised and committed on Sunday too.

The champions, who are gunning to build on their three-in-a-row exploits from last year, will look to current hurling All-Star Daithí Burke, and experienced players such as Michael Farragher, Joe Canney, Kieran McGrath and Gary Sice to see them into the last four. However Tuam have some fine players too who would love to get one over on their near neighbours and it promises to be a very tight affair. Spideál's Tommy Faherty will referee the game.

That quarter-final is preceded by Mountbellew/Moylough and Milltown who defeated Killanin the last day out at 3.30pm with James Molloy in charge.

The other quarter-final sees Michael Breathnachs and Cortoon Shamrocks in action at 3.15pm in Pearse Stadium on Sunday and that game is preceded by Killannin and St Michael's in a relegation play off at 1.30pm.

The outstanding quarter-final clash between Salthill/Knocknacarra and Caherlistrane is on hold until after the All-Ireland minor final on Sunday week, as both teams have players on Stephen Joyce's starting XV.

That game is likely to be fixed for the weekend of September 24/25.
