French film to open new GFS season

Marguerite - inspired by the life and career of Florence Foster Jenkins

FLORENCE FOSTER Jenkins was an amateur singer from the 1910s to the 1940s, who believed she was a magnificent soprano. In fact she could hardly sing at all. Still, she became a cult favourite in New York and Cole Porter was a loyal fan.

Her story has inspired the French film, Marguerite, the opening film of the Galway Film Society's Autumn/Winter 2016 season.

Marguerite (Catherine Frot ) is a much loved, much ridiculed, socialite who, through years of misguided praise believes herself a singer of exceptional talent. Starved of affection and isolated in a dead marriage, Marguerite escapes through her singing. Convinced to stage her first public performance, the scene is set for Marguerite's inevitable exposure.

The film will be screened in the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday September 18 at 8pm. Tickets are from www.tht.ie and 091 - 569777.
