Aqua exercise for expectant mums

An exciting new health initiative, Bump Aqua, a specialised aquatic ante-natal exercise and education programme delivered by an aqua-natal exercise specialist and expert midwife, the first of its kind, is commencing in Galway.

The six week programme will be delivered in collaboration with the Kingfisher Club Renmore. The specialist programme is ideally suited for expectant mums who are interested in improving their overall health and wellbeing. Participation can take place from the 12th week of pregnancy right up until the end and it is suitable for non-swimmers. Exercises are specifically designed for pregnancy and are validated by the British Midwives Association.

The benefits of water based exercise during pregnancy are hard to ignore, water provides a supportive medium for mum and baby therefore decreasing stress on the joints, improves pelvic floor and core stability, and is a comfortable and enjoyable way to exercise with other mums.

According to aqua-natal exercise specialist Caroline Costello health starts in the womb and exercise is one of the best ways to give your baby a healthy start. Regular physical activity decreases the chances of common pregnancy complications, helps to increase labour endurance levels, and aids a faster post-natal recovery.

The mother of five explains the real challenge for expectant mums is to know what are safe, effective, and appropriate exercises to perform during pregnancy. This programme aims to provide advice and education on keeping fit during pregnancy together with preparation for a more positive birthing experience.

Exercise during pregnancy can also help prevent obesity and diabetes; mothers who develop gestational diabetes, a form of diabetes during pregnancy have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in years to follow. Research demonstrates regular physical activity before pregnancy reduces the risk for gestational diabetes by half, and regular physical activity during pregnancy decreases the risk by a quarter.

Caroline Costello has delivered aquatic exercise for more than 25 years, she was one of the first teachers in Ireland to introduce aqua exercise. She has a special interest in cardiovascular disease and prevention and recently completed an MSc in preventive cardiology.

Aqua Bump will commence on Wednesday May 25 at 6.30pm in the Kingfisher Club Renmore. Booking is essential. For further information call Caroline Costello on 086 2513536.
