NUI Galway public interview with Fr Peter McVerry

The second in the series of public interviews organised by the Centre for Irish Studies as part of its programme of commemoration of the 1916 Rising will feature Father Peter McVerry in conversation with Vincent Woods.

The interview will take place on Wednesday, April 20 in the Ó hEocha Theatre, Arts Millennium Building, NUI Galway from 6.30-8pm.

A Jesuit priest from Newry, Co. Down, Father McVerry has dedicated his working life to helping the homeless and poor in Dublin. When he began the Peter McVerry Trust in 1983 the service consisted of a three bedroom flat in Ballymun.

Today the Peter McVerry Trust manages eleven hostels, over 100 apartments, a residential drug detox centre and two drug stabilisation services. These services have been under increasing pressure in recent years and McVerry claims that homelessness is now “beyond crisis” in Ireland.
