Galway’s Insight Centre among institutions to present at Mobile World Congress

CityPulse, an international research project exploring the use of smart city applications to improve the quality of life in urban environments, will be among the projects demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress 2016, taking place in Barcelona this week. The Galway-based Insight Centre for Data Analytics is among the institutions spearheading the project.

CityPulse is one of five research projects being demonstrated at the European Commission pavilion during the event, and is the only one focusing on smart cities and the Internet of Things.

CityPulse aims to improve quality of life in urban environments for individuals and organisations by introducing innovative smart city applications to help people make informed decisions in day-to-day tasks involving public services. The project does this by providing tools to enrich, integrate, and process real-time or near-real-time data such as social media events and transport data.

The CityPulse demo at the Mobile World Congress will present a mobile app that provides online information about events and analysis of data in a smart city. This allows users to find a route from a source to a destination in the city of Aarhus in Denmark. Users can also choose the types of situations they want to see or to avoid, such as air quality related situations, pollen levels, and traffic congestion, and they can also find a suitable parking spot based on live information collected by sensory devices.

The second part of the demo includes a data quality analysis, a 3D map and data visualisation tool, and a deep learning software for social media analysis that uses relevant Twitter data such as tweets about traffic incidents, social events, and crime. This social media analysis software will show a live demo of events in the city of London extracted from Twitter streams.

The CityPulse consortium comprises the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway, University of Surrey (UK ), Alexandra Institute (Denmark ), Ericsson (Sweden ), Siemens (Austria and Romania ), University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück (Germany ), Kon.e.sis (USA ), city of Brasov (Romania ), and city of Aarhus (Denmark )
