Galway WFC in confident form

A confident Galway Women's FC return to Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (7.30pm ) looking to complete a double over visitors Peamount United.

Galway produced an assertive 4-1 win over Peamount in the League Cup on Sunday, but will be preparing for a tougher task this weekend as the Dubliners seek to avenge their exit from cup action.

Special guests at Saturday evening's game will be the 1985/86 Galway League treble winning side, Western Health Board Ladies FC, commemorating their feat 30 years ago.

Galway's manager Don O'Riordan will be looking for a repeat of last Sunday's victory, despite the slow start in that final Continental Tyres WNL Cup group game. Galway needed the win to progress, while a draw would have been good enough for Peamount, and it was the home side which opened on seven minutes through Claire Kinsella.

Galway fought back, and within minutes Aislinn Meaney hit the crossbar, while debutante Jess Nolan had the ball in the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

However just before the half hour mark Meaney grabbed the equaliser with a shot from wide on the right, and 10 minutes later, Nolan, a recent transferral from Castlebar Celtic, finished to the net from a Therese Hartley through ball. By half time, Galway had wrapped up the game when senior international Savannah McCarthy found the top corner with a 40 yard free kick to out Galway 3-1 ahead.

Galway continued to dominate in the second half and were rewarded when an excellent Lynsey McKey ball found Meaney down the right and she cut into the box before finishing to the bottom left. Galway now progress to the semi-final where UCD Waves or Wexford Youths will be their likely opponents.
