Schools’ mentoring programme to hold first event in Galway in January

Slingshot Academy, Ireland’s first free monthly mentoring programme, will arrive in Galway for January 2016.

The Slingshot movement was started by a group of college students 18 months ago with the aim of tackling the rising dropout rate of incoming students in colleges in Ireland, and to create a more sustainable educational environment.

Slingshot Academy Galway will be a monthly mentoring session where secondary school students will have the chance to speak to, and be guided by, exceptional third level students and industry leaders from NUI Galway and GMIT. The movement has been operating in Dublin for the past year and has proven to be very beneficial to students in the capital.

The Slingshot Academy will take place on January 27 and 28 in Bank of Ireland’s Workbench on Mainguard Street, and the events are free to attend.

One hundred and twenty Galway secondary school students will have the opportunity to hear from eight speakers — a mix of college students and industry leaders who will help students consider their future from all angles, such as technological, cultural, scientific, and personal development, through short, inspiring talks.

Over lunch and during breaks, secondary students will participate in hands-on demonstrations and workshops to help them plan their future.

The Slingshot programme will be open to more than 3,000 secondary school students nationwide.

Slingshot Academy is supported by the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, Accenture Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and Smart Futures.
