Fine Gael statement on Brian Walsh's decision not to contest General Election

The Fine Gael Constituency Executive of Galway West & South Mayo would like to pay tribute to Brian Walsh T.D and his family for the contribution he has made to Fine Gael and the people of Galway West.

The statement said that Dep Walsh had, "for the past five years worked tirelessly on a range of issues across Galway City and County including the expansion of Galway Hospice and the Galway Port Expansion Project. Prior to that Brian was a long standing party activist from a very young age canvassing with his father Paschal who was a City Councillor. Brian made a huge contribution to Galway City as a councillor and in particular as its youngest ever Mayor in 2005-06 with his pivotal role in resolving the Eyre Square redevelopment issues."

Constituency Chairman, Dr. Enda Howley said "It is with great sadness that we recently learned of Brian's medical condition and that it would require a lifestyle change on his behalf. We hoped that it could be resolved quickly, however his final decision not to contest the general election was final confirmation of what we had feared for some time. We wish Brian, his wife Fiona, daughters Lisa and Amy every happiness into the future and hope that he has many long years of renewed good health and happiness."

"Brian's jovial good humour and generosity will be a huge loss to Irish politics but we are reassured that he Is determined to staying involved in our local Fine Gael organisation. Our strategy in Galway West - South Mayo was unique through a number of circumstances relating to a boundary revision as we had four sitting Oireachtas members seeking election to the next Dail. With Brian's withdrawal from the race we now have three truly excellent candidates who will work together during our election campaign. Sean Kyne TD, John O'Mahony TD, and Senator Hildegarde Naughton are all formidable candidates who will campaign to secure the economic recovery and ensure it reaches all parts of our country, both urban and rural."
