Abbeyknockmoy claim Intermediate hurling title

Abbeyknockmoy hurlers  collected their third intermediate title on Saturday when they defeated Maigh Cuilinn by 1-16 to 0-13 in Kenny Park, Athenry.

The Abbey men were full value for their success. They led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half time, and once Padraig O'Donnell scored a crucial goal, they never looked likely to be caught.

The club's two previous titles at this grade came in 1971 and 1985.

The 2015 trophy was annexed with some fine performances from ace free-taker Paul Flaherty, team captain John Culkin, Coleman Maher, Eoin Blade, centre back Brian Flaherty, and county minor star Caelom Mulry.

Paul Flaherty has had a fine season in the Galway championship and finished last weekend having scored 2-75 in total.

Maigh Cuilinn were overly-dependent on their free-taker Niall Mannion for scores, and they will have no complaints after losing to a better team on the day. Dan Kelly, Seosamh O'Fathartha and Eric Fox all tried hard for the defeated side.

The new Galway champions will play Roscommon senior champions Four Roads in the Connacht Intermediate Club Final next Saturday at 2pm in Athleague.
