Ceramic art exhibition

DUALITY OF Function, an exhibition featuring porcelain clay, or 'white gold' as it is also known, and three artists who work in this medium, opens in the Galway Arts Centre tomorrow.

The artists - Piet Stockmans, Isobel Egan, and Alicja Patanowska - investigate the ways in clay can inform both people's preconceptions of, and challenge their prejudices about, what is art, as well as examining the nature and of function of clay itself.

Flemish designer and ceramist Piet Stockmans has worked with porcelain since the mid 1960s, and for this exhibition will present new work under the title Shrinkage. Isobel Egan is one of Ireland's most exciting artists working in clay. Her delicate porcelain minuscule environments explore issues of fragility, personal space, and memory. Polish artist Alicja Patanowska draws inspiration from human behaviour and everyday life, to develop projects which straddle craft, contemporary design, and socially engaged practice.

The exhibition is curated by Kate Howard and Rob D'Eath, and runs until Saturday October 31.
