A mystery woman in post-war Berlin

Galwayu Film Society to screen German film Phoenix

A WOMAN who has survived the concentration camps returns to Berlin after the end of WWII. Surgeons have managed to reconstruct her damaged face, but she now looks entirely different.

This is the setting for Phoenix, which will be screened by the Galway Film Society on Sunday October 4 at 8pm in the Town Hall Theatre. Nelly (Nina Hoss ) eventually meets Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld ), her treacherous husband, but with a different face, he is not sure who she is, so Nelly allows him to think she is a stranger who faintly resembles the woman he may have betrayed. The Irish Times has called the film an "extraordinary, shameless melodrama", and compared its plot of the film to "Vertigo, the setting calls up reminders of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s work".
