Burren based performance collective, The Erratics & guests will create a series of live public performances. T Curated by Áine Phillips, the performances will engage with the historical and modern city spaces close to 126, making relationships and exchanges with Culture Night audiences and the general public alike. This event will run alongside the annual Burren Emerging Artists Exhibition at 126 Artist-Run Gallery.

Get in the mood for Culture Night with an overture provided by a noon pre-festival concert. The Access Music Project provides training opportunities for musicians to obtain the skills and knowledge to find work in the music industry and in further education. This pre-culture Night event will be this group’s last performance before graduating.

An Áit Eile and the Galway 2020 team will be hosting a night of talks, poetry, comedy and live music in The Rowing Club from 8pm until late. Like so many other fishing ports throughout Europe and the world, GalThe Claddagh Community Boat Club (The Claddagh Boatmen ) is dedicated to the restoration and sailing of traditional Galway work boats On Culture Night the Bádóiri will be joined by their Connemara boatmen as a flotilla of these beautiful craft will sail into the city, mooring nearing the Spanish Arch. (depending on weather conditions ).

Druid Theatre Company 'Celebrating 40 years of Druid',7pm

Druid was founded in Galway in 1975 by Garry Hynes, Mick Lally and Marie Mullen – the first professional theatre company in Ireland to be based outside Dublin. Since 1979, the company has had its own famous theatre on Druid Lane, the birthplace of all the work and continues to serve as a facility for the promotion and development of the arts in Galway. This Culture Night, Druid will host a series of events including talks, discussions and exhibitions. Come join us as we celebrate 40 years producing theatre in Galway.

The Eyre Square Centre joins Culture Night with a traditional Irish music session hosted by the Salthill / Knocknacarra branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The branch provides music tuition for all age groups and hosts monthly sessions. Evening shoppers will be entertained by branch members, young and old, playing some lively jigs and reels.

On Culture Night Galway Arts Centre will host three workshops. For ages 8 & under: make your own musical instrument workshop & jamming session with Galway based jazz musician and educator Matthew Berrill. For 8 + there is a music making class with Rory Grubb & his Ceramaphone. Grubb, a Dublin based musician has created an original electric ceramaphone from high quality, tuned ceramic pots and various electrical components. For 12+ Electronic Music making workshop with Ed Devane. Ed Devane delivers instrument building and music production workshops to children, young people and adults. In his workshops he will cover a wide range of topics including elements of physics, history of music and instrument design from different cultures, group discussions, teamwork exercises, recording technologies, electronics, and group music making. Berrill, Grubb and Devane will then play 20 minute sets each from 8pm and 9pm in the galleries, which will be open to the public aswell as workshop participants. Please note that participants for Matthew Berrill and Rory Grubb’s workshops must be accompanied by a guardian. The Arts Centre will also be showing Telling the Bees, a contemporary art exhibition by Bridget O'Gorman which features sculptural work and a new video by the artist who is currently researching into animism, or the belief that a non human entity contains a memory. www.bridgetogorman.com

UnravelRois is a short film by Andrew Duggan in collaboration with Olwen Fouéré and Siobhán Dempsey, filmed on the Aran islands where the pattern of interlacing lines provided the ideal geographical landscape in which to site the work. The film explores the relationships between both individual and collective memory and the natural built and trace landscapes. The physical UnravelRois process of unravelling a ball of wool around a space and then rewinding it acts to parallel internal thought processes.

Dúchas na Gaillimhe, Galway Civic Trust will host regular tours of the medieval Hall of the Red Earl on Druid Lane between 5pm and 8pm. The hall is the oldest building to be excavated within the old walls of Galway and acted as the town hall in the fledgling city. ConTempo Quartet will perform at the Red Earl's Hall at 7pm.

Dúchas na Gaillimhe, Galway Civic Trust will host regular tours of the Fisheries Watchtower Museum on Wolfe Tone Bridge between 5pm and 8pm. The museum is housed in a wonderful Victorian tower on the banks of the Corrib and is dedicated to the history of the River Corrib and its fisheries.

Galway Print Studio 'Coffee and Culture', 5-8pm

Prior to Culture Night, an on-line competition will take place for images with the theme 'Coffee and Culture'. The winning image will be screen printed in poster format and will be available on the night. Screen printing demos for the public will also take place. The activities will take place in Coffee Werk, Quay St, where free coffee samples will be available to the public also.

Galway University Hospital Arts Trust 'Aindrias de Staic and the Latchikós', 6pm

Aindrias de Staic is an actor, musician and one of a new generation of Irish storytellers. Born in Galway Ireland, his rich n rare style of fiddle playing is as unique to the west of Ireland as his story-telling, antics and humour. At 6pm Come along to the University Hospital Arts Trust for the first of two Culture Night performances by Aindrias and the Latchikós.

Giddy Biddies 'Infinity Project'

Mainguard Street

'Infinity' is a socially engaged art installation designed to provoke the viewer to stand up and acknowledge their part in the infinite link that perpetuates forced migration. In association with Culture Night 2015 and Galway 2020, a 'twenty foot' container will be placed in Mainguard Street Galway. Eight volunteers will be locked inside the container with only water to drink and a bucket for waste, simulating the conditions experienced by forced migration. The container will be painted black inside to replicate real conditions, there will be no comforts and no communication with the outside world. Participants will remain inside the container for 24 hours. Not to be missed!

Over The Edge is holding two special Culture Night open-mics, one for fiction writers, the other for poets-with prizes for the best readers. The open mic for fiction writers starts at 4pm. Participants should bring along two pages of a story to read. The open mic for poets starts at 6pm. Poets should bring along two poems to read. MC Kevin Higgins will lead a reading from the long-listed stories and poems by some of the writers on the 2015 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition, for which Kenny’s is one of the generous sponsors. All long-listed writers, who can make it to Kenny’s on the day, are invited to come and read.

Pianist Elena Gekker, who herself hails from Russia, will present an exploration of the piano music of Irishman John Field, who is credited with inventing the 'Nocturne' and who lived and worked in Russia, with the music of his contemporaries. Done using short and exciting pieces of music especially chosen for young children, and linked up by Elena in a beautifully constructed narrative. The concert will start at 7pm and last 1 hour, in the sitting room of St Mary's College, St Mary's Rd. We also encourage the idea of children being able to interact better with the performer so those that wish to do so may bring cushions to sit on up close to the piano.

What promises to be Ireland’s biggest ever Retro Gaming event will take place on Culture Night in the Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland located in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway. Attendees will enjoy the thrills of playing the great classic arcade and video games of the 1970s through to the 1990s such as Asteroids, Pacman, Space Invaders, Super Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot and Pong on legendary vintage consoles and computers such as Atari, Amiga, Commodore Amiga, Sega Megadrive and Nintendo. Mentors from Insight, local digital maker clubs and the Galway city Coderdojo club will introduce visitors to the coding behind their own creative projects and help visitors to create their own games.

Yeats.Through images, words, film, and sound, with touchscreens and rich display cases sourced from NUI Galway and archives around the world, featuring rare material from Yeats, J.M. Synge, and Lady Gregory, and original artwork from Jack B. Yeats, Gerard Dillon, and Fergus Bourke. Join Adrian Paterson and Barry Houlihan, and special guests, for a series of talks and guided tours of the ‘Yeats and the West’ exhibition and discover, in this anniversary year of Yeats2015, what the west meant to Yeats and what this might mean to us. For Culture Night 2015, Galway Dance Project will host an evening of new dance work at Nun's Island Theatre from some of Galway's most exciting contemporary dancers. Showings of new dance work will take place from 6-8pm and there will be an opportunity to engage in conversation with the dancers and choreographers about their performances after each showing. Ó’Máille – The Original House of Style:

'The Return of Johnny Patterson', 5pm

'The Return of Johnny Patterson' is a short film conceived and performed by James Fleming and directed by Finn Arden. It will be on display in the window of Ó'Máille's Style Shop. The film imagines the famous Irish singing clown Johnny Patterson (1840–1889 ) returning to Galway city centre in the present day.

'Discover the world of Classical Music', 6.30-8pm. Introducing Medieval Music: Introducing the sacred and secular music from the 11th-14th centuries. The dominance of the Church and its relationship to the musical developments. The Baroque Period and Bach and Handel: Ceremonial music and power in the Baroque period (1600–1750 ). The music of the two giants of the Baroque period: George F Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. Introducing the Symphony: The symphony was and remains one of the largest forms of orchestral compositions in music’s history. Mozart: The Man and the Artist. An Invitation to Opera. The role of opera and how it reflected changes in society. Classical Music in the Twentieth Century: Tradition and Innovation. A participatory art and cultural event to experience, explore and celebrate themes on the Commons and our Cooperative Cultural Heritage by Third Space Galway and Collaborative Ways Forward. Everyone is Welcome.. Come and join in the conversations... Using artist Seoidin O Sullivan’s ‘Seating System’ to act as a central public platform and interactive site for this performative and discursive event. Bringing together both arts and non arts groups, we aim to manifest and test the site in its potential for participation and engagement, and in the words of artist Seoidin 'to create a space for commoning, creating a space of empowerment and possibility’. Followed by an after party at Foley's Hop House in WoodQuay.
