Heritage Week at Coole

There is something for everyone in the programme of free events taking place in Coole next week to celebrate Heritage Week.

This year’s theme for Heritage Week is Ireland’s industrial and design heritage, and the first event of the week at Coole on Sunday August 23 is inspired by this theme. ‘Coole Demesne’ is a guided walk looking at the many reminders of a bygone era when Coole was a working estate. The ruins of the hot houses, coach houses, and the horse pump as well as the restored lime kiln and other vestiges of the past are a reminder of life at Coole in former times.

On Monday August 24, Coole will host ‘Yeats at Coole’, a guided walk for this special 150th anniversary of Yeats’ birth. Walk in his footsteps through the magical landscape that inspired some of his best loved poetry.

An event for children will take place on Wednesday August 26; ‘Open Your Eyes to Nature’ will feature activities for ages five to 10 years accompanied by an adult. Places limited so booking essential.

On Saturday August 29, people of all ages can enjoy an art activity event, ‘Create Your Own Coole House’. Re-create your own version of Coole House using craft materials (supplied ) and your imagination.

‘Me and Nu and Mr Yeats too’, a guided walk through Coole based on the stories of Lady Augusta Gregory’s granddaughter, will take place Sunday August 30. “Mr Yeats used to stay with us at Coole from as far back as I can remember,” recalled Anne Gregory. This walk and talk will reveal what Lady Gregory’s granddaughters really thought of this famous visitor.

All walks and activities are free, start at the visitor centre at 3pm, and last approximately an hour and a half.

Throughout Heritage Week there will be a family quiz/treasure trail with clues to find a trail to follow and fun for all. Collect sheets at the visitor centre.
