Recognising diversity, and celebrating community in Galway this Saturday

The communities of Doughiska/Merlin Woods, Roscam, and Ardaun are hosting a Pride of Place celebration this Saturday August 22. The event begins with a community parade leaving from Castlegar Community Centre in Roscam at 1pm and finishes at Doughiska Park.

The celebration marks the recent awarding of a National Pride of Place Award under the category of Urban Population of over 1000. In 2014, Galway City Council entered the community in this category, where first place was awarded with the Judges citation that the project demonstrated best practice in co-operation, collaboration, integration, and social inclusion of the highest calibre.

A marquee will be set up in the Doughiska Park, where the local community will showcase the different cultures and groups, through music, dance performance, showcase stands, sporting events, and a world food table from 2pm. Connect’s Intercultural Community performance will take place from 4pm–6pm, and will feature an original performance of singing, dancing, and drumming with local participants, and Community Spirit Drumming. GIRO, an International collection of musicians living in Galway will entertain with their renditions of early 20th century traditional tunes from Ireland, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe.

The festival finale will be the Community Social which will take place in The Clayton Hotel at 9pm with music from Harvest Moon and disco to follow. Tickets for the social are on sale at various locations at €10 euro. For more information contact ARD Family Resource Centre on 091 768 852.
